| Small
Animals
There are a variety of small animals that
we keep as pets the most common being rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters,
gerbils and rats, as well as an infinite variety of birds, and they take
a lot of caring for. Cages need to be cleaned regularly and a good
supply of both food and water needs to be available at all times.
 |
General
Information
Although most small animals do
not have routine vaccinations as such, rabbits
do need them. They will need vaccinations against myxomatosis
and HVD (haemorrhagic viral disease) both these diseases are
capable of killing your rabbit. As with cats and dogs it is
important that boosters are given annually to maintain
protection.
|
The diet of small animals also needs to
be maintained carefully, always make sure that you use a complete food
that offers all their vitamin and mineral needs. Guinea pigs especially
need a good supply of vitamin C.
Make sure their cages are of an adequate
size so that they are free to move around and invest in some carefully
designed equipment that allows them to exercise fully.
Take them to the veterinary surgery on a
regular basis for a routine health check, teeth, nails, wings and beaks
can all need a trim from time to time!
