Fleas
Fleas can conjure up a nightmare image in some peoples minds and many are reluctant to consider that their pet might have them. If you are a pet owner then it's very likely that at some point you will have to contend with fleas. There are many products on the market which can assist in eradicating fleas in your household and it is a good idea to remain vigilant throughout the year instead of waiting till your pet starts scratching!

The products available range from oral tablets, injections, sprays and drops that go on the back of the neck of an animal. Some products will need to be applied weekly and some given at 6 monthly intervals. The choice of which product is best for you and your pet can be a difficult one, it will depend on how many animals you have and whether they'll stand still long enough for you to spray them!

In some cases you may also be wise to treat your home, and possibly your car if your pet travels in their regularly, as by the time you realise there are fleas about your only seeing a mere 5% of them as adults. The rest are eggs, larvae and pupae that may be waiting in your carpets or soft furnishings. Although this all sounds a little disturbing there are products that can aid you in your battle. Some sprays are available which if used carefully will kill both the fleas eggs and larvae, they will also protect your home against invasion for several months after.

The key to the problem of fleas is to act quickly and to keep protecting your animals even in winter, warmer homes allow fleas to continue their life cycle undisturbed by the cold. They also have the ability to lie dormant for nearly 12 months until conditions are right.

Did You Know Flea Facts

A female cat flea can lay up to 27 eggs per day and produce up to 2,000 eggs in her lifetime.

Over 70% of fleas found on dogs are actually cat fleas.

Around 70 fleas can ingest 1ml of blood per day. A small 8 week old kitten has around 60 - 100ml of blood; it has been known for puppies and kittens to die from anaemia caused by bad flea infestations.

The number of fleas seen on a cat or a dog is a reflection of the environmental population of fleas.

Use of a vacuum cleaner will remove 90% of flea eggs, but only 15 - 25% of flea larvae. This is why you will still have a problem unless the carpets and upholstery are treated with an insecticide spray.

The flea is a host for a certain tapeworm, so if your animal has fleas it will often have tapeworms.

Fleas do not have ears and are virtually blind.

Fleas can jump to a height of roughly 6 feet which in comparison with its size is a very big jump.
